Tips for Sticking to a Diet While on Vacation

Sticking to a diet is hard enough but sticking to a diet and exercise plan while you are on vacation can be near impossible.  However with a little advanced planning, and some willpower just because you are on vacation doesn’t mean your diet has to.

Exercising is the easiest hurdle to overcome.  Many hotels now offer fitness rooms free of charge to facilities, so if you are lucky enough to score one of these at the hotel you are staying at you have it made.  Your best bet is to plan to get up early each day to hit the gym before the rest of your group is ready to go.  If you do not have access to a fitness center at the hotel you are staying at there are other ways to get your exercise in.  Try taking a run (or walk) on the beach, rent a bike and tour the area you are staying in, or hit the pool for a few laps.  You can always take along an exercise ball and some hand weights for working out in the room.  You can find tons of videos online that offer workout using these items, plus they travel easy, taking up very little space.

Now let’s talk about the eating part of the diet.  This is where it gets a little trickier.  Before leaving it is a good idea to gather up some diet friendly snacks to take with you in the car or on the airplane.  Chances are finding healthy snacks along your way will probably be near impossible, and if you do find them you can expect to pay premium price.

Before deciding which restaurants to eat at while on vacation try to do some research.  Be sure to check out the nutritional information on the internet before heading to the restaurant, you may find that some restaurants offer absolutely nothing that you can eat.  Look for restaurants that offer grilled or steamed fish or chicken, or other healthy options. 

If you are staying with family members of friends when you get to your destination express to them that you are on a diet, and educate them on the foods you are trying to avoid.  If your mom knows you are trying to avoid sweets she most likely won’t meet you at the door with a plate of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. 

If you do find yourself splurging while on vacation try not to beat yourself up over it.  It’s not the end of the world and you can return to your typical diet when you return home.  Just try to avoid overdoing it, and eat moderately sized portions.
